About the 'Brodgar Butterfly':
Discovered by chance in 2013, the delicate wing-like shapes appear to have been intentionally designed to catch the changing sunlight. Over 600 decorated stones have been unearthed at the 5,000-year-old site, with multiple examples of this specific design built into the inner walls and entranceways of the ancient structures. The motifs are often so ephemeral that they can only be clearly seen when illuminated by the sun at the perfect angle.
You can explore the history of the design and see 3D models on the Ness of Brodgar Project website.

In our new Time Team documentary narrated by Sir Tony Robinson, Time Team’s John Gater revisits the spectacular remains of a neolithic ceremonial centre of epic proportions at the Ness of Brodgar in Orkney.
The documentary follows the final weeks of excavation at the Ness before the trenches were backfilled, documenting both the end of more than two decades of fieldwork and the remarkable geophysical survey that hinted there may still be more to discover.
Now, as the documentary is released, Time Team has returned to Orkney to investigate the newly identified feature alongside the Ness of Brodgar team - an intriguing geophysical anomaly at one of Europe's most important Neolithic sites.
Further investigations and a new excavation filmed by the team at the Ness of Brodgar this summer hope to uncover further details around the discovery of a mysterious circular feature. Join Time Team membership to follow the full story as it unfolds and get exclusive behind-the-scenes dig watch updates.
